Many years ago, my dear friend and longtime mentor Londale Theus, a renowned SWAT Operator with the Santa Monica Police Department, and one of the nation’s first Krav Maga black belts, taught me an invaluable lesson in the warrior tradition.

Following a training session, Londale looked intently at me and said, “Greg, there are two types of pain in this world. The short term pain of discipline, and the longterm pain of regret. For the warrior, the choice is clear: We always welcome and seek out the short term pain of discipline.”

Londale’s insight is rich in biblical implication. For example, the Apostle Paul wrote in Hebrews that, “no discipline seems pleasant at the time (short term pain of discipline), but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace (thus avoiding the longterm pain of regret) for those who have been trained by it.”

The real lesson Londale helped me understand is that our thinking about the circumstances of our life ultimately shapes the person we become. Following Londale’s encouragement, and the wisdom gleaned from the Bible, I’ve learned to see trials, challenges, set-backs, and heartache as “tests” that produce perseverance, spiritual maturity, discipline, and increased faith in God.

The next time you face a season of challenge in your life, adopt the mindset of a warrior. Welcome the challenge as a testing opportunity that will, “finish it’s work in you, so that you may be perfected and complete, not lacking anything” (James 1:4).

You can do it!
